MOSQUITO MAGNET

Now how come I did not think of this fantastic machine.

How technology fools mosquitoes into thinking a deadly trap is "you and me!"

Spring is here, and along with it comes outdoor activities, April showers, and mosquitoes!

Today you'll learn how technology fools mosquitoes into thinking that a deadly trap is you and me! In 1997, a small company called American Biophysics developed a carbon dioxide-based mosquito trap called the "mosquito magnet."

The next year, they sold $200,000 worth. Continuing with just this one product, in 2001 they sold $23 million worth. In 2002, sales hit $55 million, and in 2003, they sold more than $100 million in mosquito magnets worldwide! Zowie!

So how does this mosquito magnet work? It emits carbon dioxide, heat and moisture that mimics human breathing. Placed between mosquito breeding areas (like bushes or standing water) and humans, it draws the bugs in and keeps large areas pest-free.

Still wondering why the mosquito magnet is a big hit? Wait until you go outside the next time, and I'll bet you wish you had one!

My daughter has one and it really, really, works.

INSECT REPELLANT CLOTHING--"BUZZ OFF"

Just when you thought you could not go out in the summer and face the dreaded flying insects a new product has come on the market.

New "Buzz Off" clothes make gardening (and any outdoor activity) more enjoyable!

The bikini bathing suit was introduced in 1946 as specialty summer wear for the beach. Today you'll learn that there are other new clothes just introduced that are also appealing although a bit less revealing!

Indeed, the new Buzz Off line of clothing makes gardening, hiking, and other outdoor summer activities more enjoyable by repelling pesky insects without having to apply aerosol sprays or messy, oily repellents on your skin.

Instead, Buzz Off provides a full line of head-to-toe gear for both adults and kids. They make caps and bandanas to shirts, pants and socks that permanently repel all insects from mosquitoes and ticks to ants, fleas and flies with added 30+ SPF UV sun protection!

It's also the first and only insect-repellent clothing approved by the EPA. Another great benefit when you're done outdoors? Your skin will still look smooth and beautiful when you change and head for the beach!

TIPS YOUR GRANDMOTHER WOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU

  • Spray a straw handbag with fabric protector to prevent it from getting dingy.
  • To freshen up dry-clean only clothes, toss them in the dryer with a dryer sheet and a damp washcloth for about 10 minutes.
  • If you are on your way out the door and are having static problems, just grab a metal hanger and rub it between you and the article of clothing. The hanger will remove the static electricity.
  • The reason the edges of steaks curl up when cooking is that the fat around the edges tightens up as it cooks, thus forcing the meat to curl up. If you want to avoid this problem, cut slits in the fat all the way around the meat before cooking.
  • Clean dirty pencil erasers by sanding them on the side of an emery board.
  • Dry wet mittens by pulling them over the bottom of a small jar. Place the open end of the jar over a heat duct.
  • Use hairspray on the sticky residue left on a bottle or jar from a label. Wash with warm, soapy water. Repeat if necessary.
  • If you hate it when bacon curls up in the pan, try dipping the bacon in cold water first. This should make the pieces turn out nice and flat.
  • To keep flannels soft, add a teaspoon of olive oil to the wash. The oil helps keep the materials soft.
  • Make a cake glaze from a potato by boiling it and mixing with 1/8 cup confectioner's sugar and vanilla.
  • Hang on to the corks that you are leftover from wine bottles. They can be used to clean and shine the blades of kitchen knives.
  • If you are doing a project that may get your shirtsleeves dirty, try this tip: Cut the elastic part off a pair of socks and pull them up over your shirtsleeves.

COLOUR (COLOR) THERAPY

For over 25 years I have used colour in my life and my families for health reasons.

Colour therapy is a powerful energy healing modality for everyone who seeks a sense of well being. We all use colour in some way and don't even know we are using it. eg. you put on something red and you feel excited and energetic--you wear blue and feel in control.

Throughout history, harnessing the nutritional aspects of colour provides emotional, physical, anti-aging and spiritual benefits. To have a healthy body, we need healthy cells. To have healthy cells, we need to increase their energy level by nourishing them with the properties carried in colour light.

I want to give some examples of how colour has worked for me.

When Jillian, my youngest daughter, was about five she developed hives. They kept travelling over her body and never went away. Around two in the morning (no one was sleeping) I took out my book on colour and quickly found the colour(s) I needed to get rid of hives. We got the lamp out, put the colour gels on the lamp and aimed them at Jillian's body. Within half an hour the hives had stopped moving around on her body and in an hour the hives had completely gone away. Jillian (and everyone else in the house) fell asleep. The hives never came back.

Heidi, our oldest daughter, had a hard time falling asleep at bedtime. We tried unsuccessfully many different things to help her. Nothing worked. Then I thought of colour. Was there something in the room that was sending vibrations out so powerfully that they would not let her fall asleep? I looked at the new curtains I had put up in her bedroom a few months ago and realized the bright colours on them--red, orange, bright pink, etc--were the problem. I immediately took them down and found an old pair of curtains in beige. I quickly put them up, kissed Heidi good night, and left the room. She promptly fell asleep. Those curtains never got changed again and Heidi had no trouble falling asleep.

In 1998 Rudy was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. He did everything the doctor wanted him to do but I thought colour would help him, too. I read my colour book and came to the chapter on cancer. I read the regime to follow. It would take almost a month of colour therapy to help his cancer. I made him do this regime three times. His cancer has been gone since 1999. Did the colour therapy help him? I truly believe it did.

Last Sunday Rudy and I went for a ride in a 56 Plymouth out to Irvine. I sat in the back seat. Coming home I became very sick. As I do get car sick when I ride in the back, I put the queazyness down to that. By the time I got home my temperature for 102 degrees. I was hot and cold at the same time. I have brought a high fever down on my girls many times over the years, so I went and found my colour therapy book and refreshed my memory on the colours to use. It was one hour of turquoise, followed by one hour of blue. My fever broke and I finally fell asleep. Do you know that you cannot sleep when you have a fever?

Have you ever wondered why the colour red is used so often in restaurants, bars, nightclubs? Why mauve is used at Dairy Queen? Why pink (Miller pink) is used in some prisons? Why green is used in hospitals?

Everyone's world is filled with colour. I hope you think of colour in a different way now and use it to your benefit.

ALMONDS: GIVE ME SOME SKINS

  • If you're a health nut, munch on almonds with the skin they're in. The skins give almonds extra heart-protection powers, especially if you take some vitamin E or vitamin C to boot. So what's in the skin?
  • Almonds abound with heart-healthy goodies, including vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, arginine, potassium, and fiber. The skins add even more nutrition: They're bursting with flavonoids that help protect cells from oxidation and inflammation.
  • Eat up to 15 almonds a day--easy to find, easy to reach for--go nuts for them.

TIP OF THE DAY

This is a very timely tip as we are facing an onslaught of flying creatures such as: mosquitoes, wasps, sand flies, black flies, etc. that want to attack us.

If one of these creatures happens to bite you, what you need to know is how to stop the pain and the itching.

You need to have some pennies on hand. Take a penny--American pennies work as well as Canadian pennies. Place the penny over the bite and secure the penny in place with scotch tape, a couple of band-aids or whatever you have on hand to hold the penny firmly over the bite.

You must leave the penny on for at least 20 minutes. I usually leave mine on longer as I forget to take them off until the next day.

Example: I was bit, on the back of my arm, by a wasp a few weeks ago. I applied a penny over the bite using scotch tape. It took the pain and itch away. I still had a red mark where the bite was but the pain was gone. I did sleep with the penny on that night.
